We first visited Turkey in September 2012 while on our “Circumnavigation of the Black Sea” tour. Starting & finishing in Budapest we travelled 7000km through 10 countries over three weeks around the Black Sea. A journey that might not seem too enticing of late! During that trip we spent circa one week traversing the north of Turkey from Istanbul to the Georgian border along the Black Sea coast. We said we’d return to Turkey someday but didn’t think it would take 14 years!
Turkey is often described as the crossroads of East and West, a nation where diverse cultures, histories, and landscapes converge. This unique geographical position is reflected in its rich tapestry of experiences, blending the traditions of the East with the influences of the West.
Join us for an unforgettable motorcycle tour through Turkey. Our journey begins in the vibrant city of Thessaloniki, Greece before travelling east in search of the stunning Aegean coastline. Over the next 10 days, our expertly crafted itinerary will see us traveling from the historic shores of Gallipoli to the breathtaking landscapes of Antalya, where crystal-clear waters meet charming old towns filled with rich heritage. From Antalya there are two route options available, including a shorter itinerary that skips Cappadocia and Safranbolu for those on a tighter time constraint. If at all possible we strongly suggest the longer tour.
Some Highlights Include:
- Turkey’s ability to harmoniously blend Eastern and Western elements makes it a fascinating destination for travelers. Whether you’re riding along the Aegean coast or traversing the historical Silk Road, this convergence of cultures offers a journey rich in history, flavour, and unforgettable experiences, showcasing the country’s unique identity as a bridge between two worlds.
- Ride along the Aegean coast – immerse yourself in Turkey’s diverse culture, stopping at picturesque towns and hidden gems along the way. Experience the captivating beauty of Gallipoli, where history comes alive, and take in the sights and sounds of bustling coastal towns. Make your way south, soaking in the scenic coastal roads that offer dramatic views of the Aegean Sea, motorcycling heaven.
- Our route not only includes time on the open road but also provides opportunities to explore famous landmarks and indulge in local cuisine.
- For those seeking more adventure, you can opt to venture inland (on the longer tour) to the enchanting and breathtaking region of Cappadocia, known for its unique and otherworldly rock formations, cave dwellings and the thrilling experience of hot air balloon rides, before heading toward the lush Black Sea coast.
- Turkey is not just a seaside destination. Traveling further inland, the landscapes transition dramatically, showcasing the rugged beauty of Anatolia. The region is dotted with historical sites such as ancient ruins and well-preserved Ottoman architecture, reflecting the long-standing connections between East and West. The cuisine, rich with spices and flavors, further exemplifies this fusion, with dishes that draw upon both Mediterranean influences and Central Asian traditions.
- As we head eastward towards regions like Cappadocia and beyond, the culture becomes increasingly influenced by the East, featuring unique customs, music, and crafts. In the eastern provinces, we will encounter an even more distinct culture, shaped by a rich amalgamation of ethnicities, including Kurdish and Armenian influences. The regional cuisine here becomes heartier, characterized by dishes like kebabs and rich stews, reflecting both the agricultural bounty and nomadic heritage.
- The journey culminates in the vibrant city of Istanbul, where you’ll experience an exciting blend of cultural history and modern life. Istanbul, straddling the Bosphorus Strait, serves as a living museum with its stunning architecture, including the iconic Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, and its bustling bazaars that evoke the essence of Eastern markets. Here, the charm of traditional Turkish tea houses and local eateries meets contemporary cafes and vibrant nightlife, creating a dynamic cultural scene.
